Commonality of the Port
Souda Bay is a common port for many classes of ships operating in 6th fleet. If you stay with MSC long enough, there is a high probability that you will visit Souda Bay on a 6th fleet deployment.
Typical Operations
Souda Bay is a common CLF loading port for 6 th fleet ships. If you are on a CLF ship like a T-AKE, T-AO or a T-AOE, expect to load both fuel and cargo. In addition, EPFs and ESBs also pull into Souda for extended port stays.
The Most Convenient Spot- The Argonaut
The Argonaut is an MWR liberty center located at pier K14 on the NATO pier. They are open from 0830-2200 Monday-Sunday and they sell food, drinks (including beer) and have strong WiFi. Many mariners will venture over to the Argonaut for lunch or hang out there for the evening if they do not feel like venturing far. The Argonaut it is easily walkable from the MSC berthing and is a convenient option for those looking to get off the ship for a bit. Behind the Argonaut are several MWR fields to include basketball courts and a softball field. Overall, the Argonaut is one of the more convenient and enjoyable MWR facilities you will find.
Typical Liberty Drop Off Point
When in Souda Bay, it is common to have 2 liberty busses. One that will go into Chania and one that will go to NSA Souda Bay. The exact bus schedule and drop off location will vary based on the ship’s leadership.
Taxis/Rides
Once in downtown Chaina, there is no need for taxis. Chaina is very walkable.
NSA Souda Bay
Also about 25 minutes from the pier is Naval Support Activity Souda Bay. On the base, you will find typical base services like a Navy Federal Credit Union, a Navy Exchange, a Navy Exchange Mini Mart and other typical base amenities.
