Local Food
Chania is renowned for its excellent food. Once in town, there are various bars, restaurants and cafes that you can pick from. Local Cretan cuisine includes fresh seafood, olive oil, local cheeses, gyros and traditional dishes such as baklava. Once in Chania, it is not difficult to find a restaurant. Greece is also known for its olive oil. There are many different local shops in which you can pick up a bottle to bring home or you can pick up a bottle from the NEX on base.
Beverages
As mentioned, there are a ton of waterside bars and hangout spots in which you can grab a drink. These small bars often change names/ownership, and it is east to hop from one to the next. One of the local craft beers called Charma or “Χάρμα” in Greek is well known and worth a try. Also, local to Greece is a spirit called Raki. Raki is an alcohol distilled from the residue of grapes that are left over after wine making. Raki is typically served after meals (whether you ask for it or not) and is a strong liquor with about 40-45% alcohol by volume. As a disclaimer, Raki is often served in a plastic bottle, and it can easily be confused as a water bottle! Discretion is advised!
