Guam: The Basics

Guam- The “Ol’ Reliable” of 7th Fleet

About:

Guam is an island territory of the United States that sits in the Western Pacific Ocean, about 1,500 miles east of Japan. With its tropical setting, clear water and diverse marine life, Guam is a classic tropical paradise. Guam has a rich history stemming from its implications during World War II. Ever since the War, the U.S. has maintained a significant military presence on the island.

During World War II, Guam held strategic significance as a military outpost in the Pacific. Captured by Japanese forces shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor, it became a crucial air and naval base for the Japanese military. However, its recapture by American forces in July 1944 during the Battle of Guam marked a turning point in the Pacific theater. This victory provided a vital steppingstone for Allied forces towards Japan and ultimately led to the liberation of Guam from Japanese occupation. Today, the island is a critical submarine base and logistics hub for the 7th Fleet area of operations.

The locals on Guam are known as the Chamorro people. Chamorros were influenced by Micronesian, Polynesian, Spanish, and American cultures, which contributes to Guam’s unique culture. Chamorros hold strong family values and many MSC CIVMARs are from Guam.

Apart from its historical significance, Guam is renowned for world-class scuba diving at sites such as the Blue Hole and the Piti Bomb Holes. If you do not have your scuba licenses, or have never been before, Guam is a great place to learn and get certified.

Despite being a small island, Guam is easy to explore and full of hidden gems. If your ship frequently visits Guam, it is recommended that you explore on your own to find your own local spots!
