Local Flare: Things to See, Do and Experience
Gab-Gab Beach
Maybe the most convenient and popular liberty spot on Guam, Gab-Gab is a beautiful beach walking distance from Kilo pier. Equipped with a roped off swimming area, grills and picnic tables, many ships have barbeques and parties here. With the NEX not far, grabbing food for the grill and a cooler of beverages is fun, convenient and inexpensive way to spend a Guam evening. Additionally, if you are a bit more adventurous, Gab-Gab is a popular snorkeling and scuba diving spot. Since the beach is close to the shipping channel, there is a coral reef that leads to a drop off. While there is a designated swimming area with ladders and a roped off area, just outside the rope is a lively reef full of colorful fish and sea turtles.
Tumon Bay
Tumon Bay is Guam’s downtown area and the main tourist area. As the typical liberty drop off point, the area is filled with bars, restaurants, hotels and luxury shops. Moreover, Tumon Bay is a great place to sit on a white sandy beach and swim in warm, clear water.
Chamorro Village
On Wednesday nights, there is a large, open-air market full of local food, shops and activities. Between trying local barbeque or riding a carabao, Chamorro Village’s Wednesday night market is a great way to experience all Guam’s culture has to offer in one place.
The Various Strip Clubs
For one reason or another, there are a lot of Strip Clubs on Guam. Maybe it has something to do with the large military base on the small, secluded island in the middle of the ocean, but that’s just speculation. Anyway, the Strip Clubs on Guam are wild to say the least and something to write home about. While touching in strip joints is frowned upon if not illegal on the mainland, that is not the case on Guam, but you better have deep pockets and be willing to tip. Moreover, if your friends volunteer you, or you are a rude drunk, you may become part of the show. Just remember, she doesn’t love you, she wants your money and the island loves to fight. Please act accordingly.
Scuba Diving
As mentioned, Guam has world class scuba diving. The water is warmer and clearer than Hawaii and full of colorful coral and marine life. There is no shortage of dive shops or dive spots on the island. If you do not have your license, Guam is a great place to get your license! You can go through the MWR dive shop on base, and they will put you in contact with a local instructor through the Micronesia Dive Association (MDA)(you will see their stickers all over the place on West Coast ships). Even better, you can complete a most of the training online and then do your physical dives with an instructor over 2 days. Many MSC mariners have received their dive license in Guam, and it is ideal to do during a Voyage Repair (VR) or shipyard period.
